The projects of Leander

More Low-Income Housing, is on its way to Leander. A 200 unit TDHCA backed appartment complex is going in right next to the newly built City Park. So it won't be long, before Leander gets ranked right up there with Del Val ... Way to go, to who ever gave the ok on this project. I mean this has to be the best idea there was for the long rang goal of Leander. I mean don't bring in more jobs for those who are already here and in a low-income bracket, just bring more people in so you can get more of the Houseing Tax Credit...arrghhhh Want to bet, the number of houses for sale go up in Westview Meadows and Vista Ridge subdivisions??

Sad day in Leander
Posted by Anonymous on

It is really sad that the city of Leander who really had a great thing going is going to flush it down the toliet. Because that is what this community will be if you bring this housing to Leander. I will be selling my house if it goes in. My children will not be able to even play in the new park due to gang activity and drug deals and crime that will run rampant if this happens. You laugh, you might ought to check out the other areas and the extensive growth of crime once these hand out communities go in. Using that money for say expanding the park with baseball fields and soccer fields for our kids is just a dream when you can bring in people that don't want to work what they have. Just depend on the government to give it to them. Hopefully the city council will wake up and notice that they have several spots that expire in May of this year. Which by the way not one of those coucil members live in Leander. Hey why not build it in their backyard!!!!

what's the current status of this low-income housi

I'm planning on moving to one of the subdivisions in Leander and am concerned about this low-income housing project. Where does this stand now? Who are the players involved in making this unfortunate project happen? What can be done about changing this?

sad, yes, but to see all the bad comments, I have lived by "projects" and low income complexes and to be truthful, I have delt with far worse problems from neighbors who own their own homes than from what I delt with from projects. Low income folks are not all bad and they need places they can afford to live and have oppertunities to save for a better life also. We will deal with crime, gangs, trashy property, etc, etc, as long as there are people. Just because there is low income, DOES NOT MEAN they are bad. Maybe Leander needs to move the "projects" to 2243 east, instead of allowing 50 or more over priced homes to go in right next to from 106 to 123 year homes. I had rather deal with projects, than stuck up $500,000.00 homeowners that think our homes are degrading their monterous houses...and who was here first, huh? WHO WAS HERE FIRST...DID WE ASKED FOR IT, NO! But that is what we are suppose to get....So what are you complaining about.....

what gives you the right

Obviously, the people who wrote the first comments on this site have never had to struggle to give their children a proper home. And to say that people who live in low income housing are nothing but gang-banging drug dealers is an absolutley idiotic statement, in my experience the drug dealers are usually the ones who live in the nice houses that cost $1000.00+ a month and drive really nice expensive cars going out spending money like it's nothing, while people like me, a single battered mother trying to support two kids, who work 40+ hours a week for $8.50 an hour have severe diffuculty finding an affordable place where for our childern to feel safe and rest their heads. A place they can call home. For all of you that are fortunate enough to be able to afford a brand new house what gives you the right to deny my childern of the very thing you want for yours...........

in agreement

i agree with the last statement completely. how is it fair that yall can pick on the underprivelaged while you all sit in your nice expensive homes with hot water and air conditioning? so maybe you should just shut the hell up...i cant say that i dont live in a big house, but i dont dog those who dont get the same things in life that i do. plus, it took a long time for my parents to get to that point anyways, so in a way i know how it is. so why dont yall start thinking before you speak and realise that what you say hurts others....?

bad idea

The last two poster may mean well...but the tax credit proerties DO RUIN NEIGHBORHOODS...actual take the NEIGHBOR away and you het HOODS! I am familiar with tax credit properties all over the Austin and surrounding area...I work with them...I have seen it TIME AND TIME AGAIN.

"Obviously, the people who wrote the first comments on this site have never had to struggle to give their children a proper home. "

Wrong, I grew up in Gov. Asst housing, joined the Army to get away from it, have lived on 800 bucks a month supporting a wife and kid. And never asked for anything that I didn't get myself.

"And to say that people who live in low income housing are nothing but gang-banging drug dealers is an absolutley idiotic statement,"

Uhhh, That wasn't me. And youre right, because I wasn't one but was grouped into the same lot because of where I lived.

"in my experience the drug dealers are usually the ones who live in the nice houses that cost $1000.00+ a month and drive really nice expensive cars going out spending money like it's nothing,"

So then by your statement "all" movie stars, pro-athletes and professional trained people are drug dealers and gang-bangers??? This is as bad of a comment as the one above. And again, I am not one but grouped into your list due to my house. (and I have a nice used car)(trying to keep this lite)

"while people like me, a single battered mother trying to support two kids, who work 40+ hours a week for $8.50 an hour have severe diffuculty finding an affordable place where for our childern to feel safe and rest their heads. A place they can call home. "

Are you saying that you would want or feel safer in a low-income housing area, than one in which you paid the 1000.00+ for? No, youre not saying that, youre saying that your income is the force that is battling you. You are "trying" & "supporting, while the "severe difficulty" is related to the "affordable". If a job opened up right next to your home for 18.50 and hour for 40+ hours a week, then you would have less severe difficulty but the same if not more "trying" & "supporting"

For all of you that are fortunate enough to be able to afford a brand new house what gives you the right to deny my childern of the very thing you want for yours...........

I never denied you anything, and wouldn't do so. There is Low Income housing in Leander (two that I can name off the top of my head) that when this first post was wrote, had around a 50% vacancy. And they serve a purpose to those who are living there. You jumped to conclusions about my point of view; I clearly stated that I would rather see jobs brought into our sleepy little town to help boost those who were already here. I questioned the thoughts of bringing more "need" in when we have to opportunity to give to the needy. Would you rather see more housing and competition for the little jobs that are here or a better and perhaps better paying job opportunity? I don't know the name of the company you work for or where it is, but I bet even if you got the same pay but cut the driving down (due to it being right here in Leander) you would take it due to the cost of gas and the time you would save. Why drive to Austin to make 8.50 when you could make the same 8.50 right here, with less time away from your kids, and a lesser gas bill.

Anyway the apartments are not going in now, HEB is going in down the street, maybe a Lowes too. So the jobs are coming.

And to the other post... hot water and ac does make me well to do, but lack of it does imply poverty.

Good night all...

my husband and i are actually looking into some low income houseing so that we can save for something better for us and our baby. and if there are already low income houseing apartments available and vacant then why build more? i agree with the reply....even if you have to live there why would you want more to come in and then the new low income tennents take your better jobs and save for a better future faster then you?

Already have problems.

I can tell you that Vista Ridge has a problem with speeding. Many people cut through this neighborhood to get to Eagles Way and a majority of these people do not realize all of the kids in this neighborhood. The cops are called all of the time and I think I have seen cars patroling twice since I have lived here. The police can't keep up with what's here now. So, I just hope that if they do bring in other situations that could lead to crime that they can do a little better patroling the subdivisions. When we call we are told that there isn't much that they can do. There was already one child almost ran over. That lady that almost hit the child stopped and said that she was cutting though this neighborhood to cut across Bagdad into the other subdivision. (Which makes no sense, this way you get3 stop signs and down Eagles Way you get one) We have had our pool wrecked, cars and mailboxes painted and bricks thrown through windows and there are no "projects" around here. We need help and we need solutions.

There are bad people and criminals everywhere, where are the cops? Get off of Bagdad and turn into Vista Ridge!!

thanks for the info
